Lessons In Influence From Kingly Leaders

I really liked Pastor Jim's message this last Sunday morning...and he always has us take notes during service. This message was about King Joash & the priest Jehoiada(have fun pronouncing the names, lol). I loved how Pastor Jim brought home the message of influence from this passage in 2 Chronicles! So, I thought I'd share it with you! (The places with all capital letters is where I filled in a blank in my notes.)

Lessons In Influence From Kingly Leaders: "Joash's Mentor"

Backdrop of the story:
10 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes who were about to be murdered and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Because Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram and wife of the priest Jehoiada, was Ahaziah's sister, she hid the child from Athaliah so she could not kill him. 12 He remained hidden with them at the temple of God for six years while Athaliah ruled the land. (II Chronicles 22:10-12 NIV)

Who am I INFLUENCING?
Who is INFLUENCING me?

God Is Looking For People Who...

>KNOW what they are LIVING for

>LIVE it 100%

>CHANGE their surroundings rather than YIELDING to them

KING JOASH -- the THERMOMETER(influenced by surroundings)

11 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes who were about to be murdered and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. 12 He remained hidden with them at the temple of God for six years while Athaliah ruled the land. (II Chronicles 22:11a, 12 NIV)

Jehoiada and his son brought out the king's son and put the crown on him; they presented him with a copy of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him and shouted, "Long live the king!" (II Chronicles 23:11 NIV)

>> Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the years of Jehoiada the priest. (II Chronicles 24:2 NIV)

17 After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them. 18 They abandoned the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols. (II Chronicles 24:17, 18a NIV)

After Jehoiada dies, just like that Joash follows the officials instead, and turns away from the LORD.

JEHOIADA -- the THERMOSTAT(sets the temp, influences surroundings)

>It takes COURAGE

In the seventh year Jehoiada showed his strength. (II Chron. 23:1a NIV)

>It takes INITIATIVE

Jehoiada said to them, "Here is the king's son! The time has come for him to reign! The LORD has promised that a descendant of David will be our king. (II Chron. 23:3b NIV)

>> Leadership is INITIATIVE that results in INFLUENCE

>Step up to RESPONSIBILITY

>Reach out RELATIONALLY

And pastor Jim tacked this last verse onto the very end of our notes, which I found very interesting...

Without oxen a stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest. (Proverbs 14:4 NIV)

To me, it means that sometimes taking care of things, leading things, and stepping out, gets messy and uncomfortable. But if we don't step up and do anything, nothing will get accomplished that is worth while.
