The following notes are from an awesome message by Rev. Tom Richardson - his heart's message was "Neighborhood Evangelism", and how do we DO that? This was really challenging and really got me thinking!
The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:14 NIV)
Neighborhood Evangelism...
Love has three basic components
1. Understanding
2. Acceptance (acceptance doesn't mean approval)
3. Involvement
Jesus already told us that to love our NEIGHBOR as our SELF is the second greatest commandment.
Jesus is a FRIEND OF SINNERS, so we must also relate with love to people who are not living God-pleasing lives.
The Lord wants your neighbors to be His. He created them and He wants them back. He has commissioned you to help bring them back to Him.
(The enemy of our spiritual life is busyness - a spirit of distraction.)
"Love your neighbor as yourself" What are some ways you can? How do I love myself?
1. I feed myself.
2. I exercise.
3. I spend time w/ people I care about.
4. I clothe myself.
5. I take part in activities I enjoy.
6. I learn new things.
7. I relax.
8. I take care of my stuff.
9. I build relationships.
The Lord has put into the life of each of us the interests, the talents, and the skills we can use to reach our neighbors.
Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives. (Galatians 5:25 The Message)
100% Intention + Mechanism (method) = RESULTS
What would need to change in your life for you to be able to build relationships with your neighbors?
This mission is, at its very core, a mission of the heart.
Remember: Your neighbors don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.
